You will never get everything done

And that's ok

It's Friday. For most of us, that's the end of our work week.

Did you get everything done that you wanted? I'm going to guess "no". Very few people get everything done that they wanted to get done.

It's a little bit of over-optimism for how much we can get done each day mixed with the reality that things take longer than we think, or we may get pulled into other priorities.

A while ago, I noticed I'd reach the end of the week and feel bad that I didn't get everything done. But I was missing the fact that each week I was getting a lot done.

In fact, my important goals were moving forward, and yet here I was focusing on the negative. It's counter-productive and not helpful.

So this is a friendly reminder to not dwell exclusively on what you didn't get done.

Now for a dose of reality: This also doesn't mean you should be complacent. In fact, use each week's missed target as a chance to recalibrate next week and take on a more realistic amount of work.

And definitely be hesitant to over-commit to others. If I'm promising things to other people, and then consistently missing those promises, that is something I can't ignore. It erodes trust and damages relationships. I have to fix it.

By the way, if you have a counter-example of someone who always gets everything done they planned, I'd love to meet them and hear how they do it!

Here to help,

Joel
