An interesting idea for PR comments

One extra word can make a difference

I got a thought-provoking reply to an earlier tip this week on offering positive feedback in a code review that I wanted to share.

Benedicte shared a site called Conventional Comments with me, and said it lined up with some of the points in my tip, and expanded it even further.

The basic idea is that by adding a simple prefix to a PR comment like "nitpick:", "suggestion:", or "praise:", it quickly frames the comment in a particular context, helping the recipient better understand the intent of the comment.

For example, if you mention something in a comment, does the recipient need to take action on it right away? Could it be addressed in a future pull request? Or is it just an observation or mild suggestion? Using these prefixes helps clarify that.

I've not yet tried this personally, but I can definitely see how it might help, so I wanted to share the idea with you as well.

Here to help,

Joel
